It poured down on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday! It sprinkled on Thursday and Friday! It even spat on Saturday! But by the time people started arriving for Carols in the Park 2011, the sun was out and the sky was predominantly blue!

On Saturday 10th December MOBC joined with All Saints Anglican Church, Oatley Uniting Church, and Oatley Anglican Church, to host an evening of community carols and musical presentations attended by over 1,000 people.

Oatley West Public School Concert Band set the tone with a wonderful repertoire of Christmas music played to a very high standard. Then, at 7pm, Stephen Anderson, the rector of All Saints Anglican, welcomed the crowd and introduced a program of well-known Christmas carols.

Julie Mellor, of Oatley Uniting Church conducted a community band, and Benita Clark, Louise Radcliffe, Warwick Rosier, and Neil Saintilan, all of MOBC, and wearing a variety of festive headgear, led the singing.

Minooka preschool, Arndu preschool, and St Joseph’s Primary School presented special Christmas songs; Il-Woong Kim, the senior minister of Oatley Uniting Church gave a Christmas talk, and the evening culminated in the traditional fireworks display.

All in all it was a great way to celebrate the Christmas story, so thank you to everyone who made it happen!

Each year MOBC takes a different motto to help provide focus and direction. In 2012 our motto is, ‘Your Kingdom Come’, words which are taken from the prayer Jesus taught His disciples to pray. During 2012, the Sunday preaching will look at what the kingdom is, why it is important, what it looks like here on earth, and how it is unstoppable. Make sure to join us!

More than $8,500 raised for disaster relief in Queensland

It may well have been the wettest April day in more than 20 years but nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of MOBC’s large team of volunteers and so the Community Fun Day held on Saturday 16th April proved to be a great success.

While the weather forced a scale down program of events outside, MOBC’s large and comfortable facilities allowed for a hive of activity inside. Several brave owners of classic cars thumbed their noses at the rain and put their pride and joy on displpay while still other bold souls ignored the wet to play on the large inflatables and visit the animal farm. However most people sought sanctuary inside where they enjoyed the food, coffee, arts and crafts, face painting, hair spraying, minute to win-it games, and charity auction that were on offer.

Mark Coure, who is Oatley’s new Member of Pariliament, formally opened procedings, and Jay Beatty, who is pastor of Chuwar Baptist Church, Ipswich was the special guest. Jay’s family lost their home in the recent floods and so he was delighted that all proceeds from the day were designated for disaster relief in Queensland. By the end of the day over $8,500 had been raised and will be used by the Baptist Union of Australia to help to those who are doing it tough because of the floods.

Thanks are due to all those who made the Day the success that it was and to all who supported it.

For several years, now, MOBC has worked together with neighbouring churches, schools and pre-schools to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Each year the number of people attending the event has grown, with 2010 proving to be one of the biggest celebrations yet.

Up to a thousand people gathered in Oatley Memorial Gardens to enjoy a program of community carols and musical presented by some of the youngest members of the community. As usual the evening finished with a spectacular fireworks display.

Carols in the Park 2011 may seem a long way off, but watch this space!
